Watercolour - drawing from nature

Service Description

Each class explores nature themes and drawing and painting techniques, through a combination of contextual references, observation and practical exercises. During the first part of class, we review examples of work from the previous class, I introduce the ideas and inspirations for this session and we discuss relevant artists' work. I will then guide you through a series of practical exercises (the demonstration part of the class will be recorded) addressing mark-making, explaining drawing and painting techniques such as layering and lifting off, wet-in-wet and dry brush, exploring formal elements such as line and texture, shape and form, tone, colour and composition. You are encouraged to join in with the practical activities and during the final part of class there will be an opportunity to show work-in-progress, this is optional but can be helpful for those who would like feedback and guidance on how to improve their work. This online class is suitable for all ability levels including beginners. You will need access to Zoom, a flat surface to work on and some basic art materials: watercolours or drawing ink, brushes and water, watercolour paper and some scrap paper. We will work from direct observation of natural objects and reference images.
